Character [Chinese]

IPA: /mi̯ɛn³⁵/ [Mandarin, Sinological-IPA], /miːn²¹/ [Cantonese, Sinological-IPA], /mi̯ɛn³⁵/, /miːn²¹/ Chinese transliterations: mián [Mandarin, Pinyin], mian² [Mandarin, Pinyin], ㄇㄧㄢˊ [Mandarin, bopomofo], min⁴ [Cantonese, Jyutping], mián [Hanyu-Pinyin, Mandarin], mián [Mandarin, Tongyong-Pinyin], mien² [Mandarin, Wade-Giles], myán [Mandarin, Yale], mian [Gwoyeu-Romatsyh, Mandarin], мянь [Mandarin, Palladius], mjanʹ [Mandarin, Palladius], mìhn [Cantonese, Yale], min⁴ [Cantonese, Pinyin], min⁴ [Cantonese, Guangdong-Romanization], mjien [Middle-Chinese], /*men/ [Old-Chinese, Zhengzhang]
Etymology: Original form of 邊. In oracle bone inscriptions, phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *men) : semantic 自 (“since; from”) + phonetic 丙 (OC *pqraŋʔ). It's possible that 自 was also a sound component as the original form of 鼻 (OC *blids). In bronze inscriptions 方 (OC *paŋ, *baŋ, “side; direction”) was added as a semantic or phonetic component. In the modern form, 丙 has corrupted into 穴. In the seal script form, 方 corrupted into 𠔽.
